About

Hi, I’m Matt.  I’m a bunch of things, but here are some starting points to give you an idea where I’m coming from:

  • disabled.  I’m vision-impaired, and have been all my life.  I also have multiple sclerosis;
  • fat.  Despite what the telly and the newspapers might lead one to think, there are worse things;
  • feminist.  I’m not sure it’s really useful to argue about whether one can be a feminist if one is male — opinions vary — so if you want to refer to me as a feminist-ally rather than as a feminist I’m not going to get into a fight with you about it;
  • Australian.  But deeply disinclined toward patriotism.  There are better and worse (much worse!) places to have been born.  I got lucky;
  • technical geek.  Particularly with respect to UNIX systems.  I built a career of sorts out of this, but have recently gone haring off in a slightly different direction — these days I do terrible things with Perl to help make more accessible websites;
  • socially progressive but economically literate.  There will probably be posts about this.  Many posts.  You have been warned;
  • history and politics nerd.  Bit of a focus on western European and American history, Australian and American politics;

This is my personal blog.  I’ll write about whatever takes my fancy.
